Special Issue on Sovereignty

The notion of sovereignty understood as the authority of the state to govern over its territory, has been resuscitated both on the Left and the Right, from Podemos to Trump, thus taking once again the center stage in political debates. We could ask if we can imagine a progressive vision of political sovereignty, such as the one sketched by William Mitchell and Thomas Fazi in their recent book, Reclaiming the State. But we may as well want to inquire into the general need for, appeal and promise of sovereignty in all its different manifestations - in particular in a world where sovereignty has become a scarce resource. In a disenchanted, extremely unequal world, sovereign moments, and rituals capable of bringing such moments about, become rare. We invite papers from across anthropology, critical theory, and philosophy, to think theoretically through the notion of sovereignty, and to think the concept through unconventional or extreme examples. In particular, following themes will be of interest:

*sovereignty and the state

*sovereignty and crime, murder, torture or tyranny

*sovereignty and religion

*sovereignty and economy

*sovereignty and excess, luxury, wasting, exploitation

*sovereignty and the sacred and ritual
